People do get really anxious about learning to drive, especially as they get close to their test.
I’ve taken some advice from a driving instructor, a lady who does some coaching for people who have got anxiety. But it’s a bit of a grey area. I’d like to know other things, and how to signpost people to other people that can help them.

I volunteer to mentor young people outside of being a driving instructor but I struggle to point people in the right direction. My students tend to open up to me about their family issues, I listen to them, supporting them as much as I can.
This training would give me the tools I need to help others and prevent them from making rash decisions.

The rate of depression for youngsters nowadays is much greater than 10-15 years ago. I think the statistics show one in two people has anxiety.
Some pupils express that they can’t pick up new skills very easily or are nervous of trying. I try to address their concerns and get to the bottom of what it is they are worried about and put a plan in place to help them work through these barriers to manage their thoughts and feelings that influence their behaviour.

I think this training would be very useful, especially with things like anxiety, helping people to pass their tests.
It’s common that learners open up about their mental health. It’s not something we get taught as driving instructors. We get taught how to put people through test, but not necessarily the social skills to help people with any issues that they have.

I’ve been a driving instructor for 14 years and I’ve noticed a lot more young learners struggling with their mental health than in my earlier career.
This course will be helpful for me to navigate these conversations and make sure I can help or direct them to other resources when there is a lot going on, as my students can be very open about how they’re feeling.

I want to help pupils understand more about their mentality to driving, in most cases their fears are based on external factors and not the driving itself.
I believe the course will help me recognise the signs to look out for. I have some students who have inadvertently told me they have Autism or Asperges but hid it because their parents still have that stigma around it.
